Post-Tour Engagement

STANDARD: Aim to foster authentic relationships with people and places that are then sustained post-tour.

Minimum Practice

Ensure relationships are concluded ethically and respectfully, without treating engagement as purely transactional.

Best Practice

Approach touring exhibitions as an opportunity to build long-term relationships grounded in trust and mutual benefit. Relationship‑building is valued as an ongoing responsibility that extends beyond delivery and reporting.

Guidance

At the beginning of a tour, it can be hard to imagine the complex relationships and unique experiences that your exhibition will foster. Approaching the creation of a touring exhibition as an opportunity to connect and engage with new audiences and creative workers will make for a more rewarding journey, even when things don’t go to plan. With the level of consultation and community engagement expected of a touring exhibition being high, there should be an aim to sustain the relationships fostered well beyond the touring engagement. Sending community groups thank you letters, creating forums (online or in-person) for people across the different venues to connect and reflect on their experiences, or producing further participatory projects involving the same people, are all simple ways to continue to nurture relationships. When keeping in contact with the creatives and host venues of tours afterwards, you may also find that there are unintended opportunities that arise from your project. These could include artists or curators being offered additional projects with host venues, artworks or objects connected to your tour being acquired, or the further employment of specialists connected to a presentation of your tour.
