Payment for time, expertise, labour, lived experience, or cultural knowledge at a fair and industry-standard rate. In a First Nations engagement context, remuneration is not optional or discretionary but is a baseline requirement. Consultation, advisory input, Welcome to Country ceremonies, the provision of cultural knowledge, and participation in governance or decision-making processes are all professional contributions that must be compensated appropriately and budgeted for from the outset of any project. Consultation without remuneration is extractive and undermines the legitimacy of the engagement. See also: Cultural load; and Free, Prior and Informed Consent.
