ICOM UK: International Touring Exhibitions Template Agreement and Guidance Notes

A contract, or Exhibition Hire Agreement, between the organiser and a hirer of an international touring exhibition is not the starting point for negotiating the terms of an international touring exhibition. It is a formal document to set out the roles and responsibilities already discussed and agreed between the parties involved.

Research by ICOM UK, the British Council and the Touring Exhibitions Group (TEG) has shown that one of the key issues for museums undertaking international touring exhibitions is the contractual aspect.  This template international touring exhibitions agreement was produced in response to this demand.

A designed PDF of the template agreement with guidance notes can be downloaded here. It is accompanied by a Word document of the template agreement (without the guidance notes) that can be adapted for use by museums and galleries.

This Template does not contain legal advice. It should not be seen as a substitute for individual legal advice in any given case.

Commissioned and developed by International Council of Museums – ICOM UK and the British Council as part of the Working Internationally Regional Project (WIRP) and Supporting International Engagement Project, with legal advice by Farrer & Co.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) is an international organisation of museums and museum professionals which is committed to the research, conservation, continuation and communication to society of the world’s natural and cultural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible.
